First-generation BMW X4 (F26, 2014–2018)

The F26 was BMW's first mid-size Sports Activity Coupé — a lower, sportier-styled alternative to the F25 X3, sharing the same rear-wheel-drive-based platform, wheelbase, and full engine lineup. Launched in 2014 and produced through 2018, the X4 applied the coupé-SUV concept pioneered by the larger X6 to the compact-executive segment. The sloping roofline and wider rear track gave the X4 a more athletic profile than the X3, though rear headroom and boot capacity were reduced as a consequence. All X4s came with xDrive all-wheel drive as standard — unlike the X3, which offered sDrive rear-wheel-drive variants. The engine range spanned turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrols, four-cylinder and six-cylinder diesels, and the eight-speed ZF automatic was standard across the board. The F26 competed directly with the Mercedes GLC Coupé and was produced alongside the X3 at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the United States. It was replaced by the second-generation G02 X4 in 2018.

Engines

Petrol

The F26 petrol range offered turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder options. The xDrive20i (2014–2018) used the N20B20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 184 hp and 270 Nm — adequate for everyday driving but not the natural choice for a coupé-SUV. The xDrive28i (2014–2018) used a higher-output N20 variant producing 245 hp and 350 Nm — the more rewarding four-cylinder choice, with strong mid-range response and sufficient performance for spirited driving. The xDrive35i (2014–2016) featured the N55B30 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 306 hp and 400 Nm — smooth, powerful, and well-suited to the X4's sporting character. From 2016, selected markets received the M40i with the newer B58B30 3.0-litre turbo inline-six producing 360 hp and 500 Nm. The N20 four-cylinder requires attention to the oil pump chain, high-pressure fuel pump, and VANOS system beyond 100,000 miles; the N55 inline-six is robust but benefits from valve-cover gasket and charge-pipe monitoring at higher mileages.

Diesel

Diesel variants were the most popular in the UK market. The xDrive20d (2014–2018) used the N47D20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 184 hp and 380 Nm on early models, transitioning to the B47D20 producing 190 hp and 400 Nm from 2015 onwards — the B47 bringing improved refinement, lower emissions, and crucially, a front-mounted timing chain replacing the N47's problematic rear-mounted design. The xDrive30d (2014–2018) employed the N57D30 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 258 hp and 560 Nm — effortless torque and refined cruising ability, making it the ideal long-distance engine in the range. The xDrive35d (2014–2016, selected markets) used a twin-turbo N57 variant producing 313 hp and 630 Nm. Early xDrive20d models with the N47 engine require timing-chain inspection beyond 80,000 miles; the B47 replacement resolved this issue. The N57 inline-six diesel is exceptionally robust and long-lived, with many examples exceeding 200,000 miles on proper maintenance.

Hybrid & Electric

Hybrid and electric variants were not available for the F26 X4. BMW's electrification of the mid-size SUV range did not begin until the second-generation G02 X4 and the parallel iX3 programme. The F26's rear-wheel-drive-based platform was not designed to accommodate hybrid or electric powertrains.

Service points for this generation

The F26 is mechanically identical to the F25 X3 in all service-relevant respects — engine, transmission, suspension, and drivetrain components are shared. Engine choice determines the service profile. Early xDrive20d models with the N47 diesel carry the well-documented timing-chain risk: chain stretch and tensioner wear cause cold-start rattling and, if neglected, engine failure — preventive replacement (£1,200–£2,000) is strongly recommended beyond 80,000 miles. Post-2015 models with the B47 diesel resolve this issue with a front-mounted chain and improved durability. The N57 3.0-litre diesel is exceptional — smooth, powerful, and remarkably durable; DPF health, quality fuel, and timely oil changes are the primary service considerations. The N20 turbo petrol requires attention to the oil pump chain, high-pressure fuel pump, and VANOS system; the N55 inline-six petrol is more robust but benefits from valve-cover gasket and charge-pipe monitoring. The eight-speed ZF 8HP automatic is durable and smooth; fluid and filter changes every 60,000 miles maintain long-term reliability. xDrive all-wheel drive (standard on all F26 variants) adds transfer-case fluid changes and front differential servicing. Suspension is conventional double-wishbone front, multi-link rear — control arm bushes and drop links are the most common wear items. The F26 is a well-engineered platform that rewards regular specialist servicing and prompt attention to engine-specific weak points — particularly the N47 timing chain on early diesel models.

Second-generation BMW X4 (G02, 2018–present) – coupé-style SUV with B47/B57 diesel and B48/B58/S58 petrol engines – servicing and diagnostics at The Mini & BMW Specialist, West Midlands.

The G02 is the current-generation X4, launched in 2018 as a comprehensive evolution of the F26 on BMW's modular CLAR platform — shared with the G01 X3. Larger, more refined, and significantly more technology-rich than its predecessor, the G02 offers improved rear headroom and boot capacity whilst retaining the distinctive coupé roofline that defines the X4. The engine range moved entirely to BMW's latest B-series and S-series families: turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrols, four-cylinder and six-cylinder diesels, and the high-performance X4 M (F98) powered by the S58 twin-turbo inline-six shared with the M3 and M4. A mid-life facelift (LCI) arrived in 2021, bringing revised styling, updated iDrive, and improved efficiency across the range. xDrive all-wheel drive remains standard on all variants. The G02 competes with the Mercedes GLC Coupé and Porsche Macan, and its combination of sporting character, practicality, and powertrain diversity has made it a stronger commercial success than the F26 predecessor.

Engines

Petrol

The G02 petrol range moved to BMW's latest modular engine families. The xDrive20i (2018–present) uses the B48B20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 184 hp and 290 Nm — a smooth, efficient base petrol with adequate performance for daily driving. The xDrive30i (2018–present) uses a higher-output B48 variant producing 252 hp and 350 Nm — the more rewarding four-cylinder, with strong mid-range response and refined motorway cruising. The M40i (2018–present) features the B58B30 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 360 hp and 500 Nm — smooth, powerful, and widely regarded as one of BMW's finest modern engines. At the top of the range, the X4 M and X4 M Competition (F98, 2019–present) deploy the S58B30 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six producing 480 hp (standard) or 510 hp (Competition) and 600 Nm — genuine sports-car performance in an SUV body. The B48 is well-proven and durable; the B58 is exceptionally refined with excellent long-term reliability; the S58 demands specialist M-car knowledge and premium maintenance.

Diesel

Diesel variants remain popular in the UK and dominate fleet sales. The xDrive20d (2018–present) uses the B47D20 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 hp and 400 Nm — the sweet spot of the G02 range, combining strong low-end torque with excellent fuel economy (45+ mpg achievable). The xDrive30d (2018–present) employs the B57D30 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six producing 265 hp and 620 Nm — effortless performance with exceptional refinement, making it the ideal long-distance cruiser. The M40d (2018–2021) used a higher-output B57 variant producing 340 hp and 700 Nm — diesel performance rivalling many petrol sports cars. The B47 four-cylinder diesel is reliable with a front-mounted timing chain and no repeat of the N47's rear-chain issues. The B57 inline-six is BMW's finest modern diesel — smooth, powerful, and durable. DPF health, AdBlue replenishment, and quality fuel are the primary diesel service considerations across all variants.

Hybrid & Electric

Hybrid and electric variants are not available for the G02 X4. BMW's electrification of the mid-size SUV coupé segment has focused on other platforms — the iX3 and iX serve the electric market, whilst plug-in hybrid options are concentrated in the X3 and X5 ranges. The G02's CLAR platform is capable of accommodating hybrid powertrains, but market positioning has prioritised combustion and M-performance variants for the X4.

Service points for this generation

The G02 is mechanically identical to the G01 X3 in all service-relevant respects — engine, transmission, suspension, and drivetrain components are shared. The B47 2.0-litre diesel is reliable and well-proven; DPF health is the primary concern, particularly for short-journey urban use — soot buildup from incomplete regeneration cycles risks DPF failure (£1,500–£2,500 to replace). The B57 3.0-litre diesel is exceptional — smooth, powerful, and durable with many examples exceeding 150,000 miles on proper maintenance. The B48 petrol is robust and well-understood; coolant system monitoring is advisable at higher mileages. The B58 inline-six (M40i) is one of BMW's most reliable modern engines but benefits from quality oil (LL-04 specification) and timely coolant checks. The S58 twin-turbo (X4 M/Competition) demands specialist M-car knowledge: higher thermal loads, track-oriented oil specifications, and performance brake wear patterns all require experienced diagnosis. The eight-speed ZF 8HP automatic is durable and smooth across all variants; fluid and filter changes every 60,000 miles maintain long-term reliability. xDrive all-wheel drive adds transfer-case fluid changes and front differential servicing. Suspension is double-wishbone front, multi-link rear — control arm bushes and adaptive dampers (where fitted) are the most common wear and diagnostic items. The G02 is a well-engineered, reliable platform that rewards regular specialist servicing — particularly prompt DPF attention on diesels and specialist M-car care on F98 variants.

How much does it cost to service a BMW X4?

A BMW X4 service typically costs £150–£350 at an independent specialist, depending on engine type and service level. The X4 shares its full powertrain and platform with the BMW X3, so servicing costs are identical. Four-cylinder diesel and petrol variants (xDrive20d, xDrive20i) sit at the lower end; six-cylinder models (xDrive30d, M40i) and the X4 M Competition are higher due to increased oil capacity and labour-intensive access.

We use genuine BMW or OE-standard parts and follow BMW's service schedules to the letter. Every service includes full diagnostic scanning via BMW-specific equipment, fluid checks, brake inspection, and digital service history update where fitted — typically at 30–50% less than main dealer prices. View X4 service options and book online.

Is the BMW X4 the same as an X3 underneath?

Yes. The X4 is the coupé-styled alternative to the X3 — lower roofline, sportier stance, and more aggressive rear styling. Both share the same platform, engines, transmissions, xDrive system, and core mechanical components. The first-generation F26 X4 shares with the F25 X3; the current G02 X4 shares with the G01 X3. Servicing costs, parts, and reliability are identical.

The only practical differences are reduced rear headroom and slightly less boot space due to the sloping roofline. From a maintenance perspective, there is no difference — same service intervals, same parts, same diagnostic approach. View X4 service options and book online.

Does my BMW X4 have the N47 timing chain problem?

Only if you own an early first-generation F26 xDrive20d (2014–2015) with the N47 diesel engine. The N47's rear-mounted timing chain is a well-documented weak point — chain stretch and tensioner wear cause cold-start rattling and, if ignored, catastrophic engine failure. Preventive chain and tensioner replacement costs £1,200–£2,000 and is strongly recommended beyond 80,000 miles.

Post-2015 F26 models and all second-generation G02 X4s use the B47 diesel with a front-mounted timing chain — far more durable and accessible for inspection. If you're unsure which engine your X4 has, we can identify it from your registration and advise on any timing-chain work needed. View X4 service options and book online.

How often does a BMW X4 need servicing?

BMW's Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system monitors oil condition, brake wear, and filter life in real time and recommends an oil service every 24 months or approximately 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. Brake fluid replacement is due every 2 years, and a major vehicle inspection every 4 years. The iDrive screen displays service notifications as each item becomes due.

For diesel X4s making predominantly short urban journeys, we recommend not stretching oil-service intervals to the full 24 months — short runs without DPF regeneration cycles accelerate soot buildup and oil contamination. The M40i and X4 M Competition benefit from more frequent oil changes if driven hard or used on track. View X4 service options and book online.

Can I service my BMW X4 at an independent garage without losing the warranty?

Yes. Under EU Block Exemption Regulation, retained in UK law, you can have your BMW X4 serviced by any qualified independent garage without affecting the manufacturer's warranty — provided the garage uses parts of equivalent quality and follows BMW's service schedule. This applies to all X4 variants including the M40i, M40d, and X4 M Competition.

We use genuine BMW or OE-standard parts (often supplied by the same manufacturers that supply BMW directly), follow BMW's service schedules to the letter, and update your digital service history where fitted. Your warranty stays fully intact, typically at 30–50% less than main dealer prices. View X4 service options and book online.
