Real Workshop Insights
This isn’t a quick edit job – it’s a real look at the full procedure. You’ll see what we encounter when working on these cars, including common issues like seized bolts, oil sludge buildup, and worn crank seals.
Why This Matters
Once you’ve reached this stage, you’ve invested the labour — don’t cut corners. We always recommend replacing the full kit including crank seal, cam seals, tensioners, guides, and fresh oil.
FAQs
Do I need special tools to remove the timing case?
Yes, including pullers and locking tools for the crank and camshafts. You’ll also need sealant and a torque wrench for reassembly.
Can you see the chain wear with the engine out?
Yes – once the cover is off, slack in the chain or damaged guides are often very visible. In some cases the tensioner will be fully extended, showing clear wear.
Is this a DIY job?
Not really. This job is advanced and requires an engine hoist, timing tools, and experience with diesel engines. Mistiming the engine will result in serious damage.
How many hours does this job take?
Typically 18–20 hours for a full strip down and rebuild with engine removal. Labour cost alone is a significant factor — which is why it’s worth doing properly.
